AI agents have started paying each other more often. They're paying less each time.

In the week of August 17, machine-to-machine payments on the x402 protocol reached a weekly count of 8.7 million transfers, their highest of 2026 and an actual increase from under 1 million in March this year.

The same week also saw total dollar volume of $367,950.

Base used for almost everything

USDC has been the queen since the beginning of x402, which allows software to pay other software to fulfill a request without invoices, subscriptions, features or even human approval.

As x402 set its all-time weekly transfer record (20.1 million) back in November 2025, Base solo accounted for 18.7 million (~93% of all) whilst Solana trudged behind with only 1.3 million.

The counterbalance for that has shifted quite a bit. Base remains the leader for August with 4.2 million, but its proportion has fallen to 48%. Solana rose to 3.3 million, or 38% of the total (up from around 6% nine months ago).

Polygon and Algorand divide the rest. Solana's growth reflects real deployment rather than a single team running a testing loop, and developers building agentic payment flows are clearly no longer defaulting to a single chain.

The dollars didn't grow at the same rate with which they were counted

Transfer counts paint a rosier picture than dollar volume does. The record for weekly volume, just over $10 million, was set the same week the transfer record was set in November, with $9.78 million of that running through Base.

August 17 was nothing like that at all: $191,816 on Base, $91,715 on Solana, $50,785 on Algorand, $33,633 on Polygon. Average transfer size works out to just under 4 cents, down from tens of cents through late-2025.

That's the protocol doing more or less what it was designed to do, x402 is for payments of such small value that a card network won't touch them. That is also why the increasing number of transfers is largely due to agents generating more API calls rather than more money changing hands.

What's still missing

In particular, none of that is an issue for x402. It should look like this in the early days, huge counts, tiny totals, for a payment rail built for sub-penny transactions. And by its own metric, 2026 is turning into the best year for the protocol yet, with transfer volume spread across more chains than at any earlier point this year, and a steady growth path traced back to June.

What has not occurred yet is the week where both transfer count and dollar volume rise together, agents paying real cash for something rather than just pennies for an API ping. Until that week shows up, what's visible right now is adoption of a payment mechanism. It remains to be seen whether a real economy grows up around it.

1️⃣ Coinbase picks Chainlink to plug tokenized stocks into global DeFi

Coinbase has tapped Chainlink to provide price data for its tokenized stocks, letting shares of companies like Apple and Nvidia trade freely across decentralized lending and trading platforms. The deal matters most for crypto users outside the US, giving them access to blockchain versions of US equities the same way DeFi already handles stablecoins and tokenized Treasuries.

2️⃣ SEC subpoenas Goldman and JPMorgan over AI fund’s leveraged collapse

The SEC has subpoenaed Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan, Citigroup, and Bank of America over their lending to Situational Awareness, the AI-focused hedge fund whose value fell 67% in July, according to a Reuters source.

For AI investors and firms broadly, this isn't just about one fund's troubles. Regulators are examining the borrowing practices behind concentrated AI bets on companies like Micron and SanDisk, amid growing central bank warnings that heavy leverage on a narrow set of AI stocks could pose a real risk to global financial stability.

3️⃣ Bitcoin surges past $80,000 as crypto rally holds firm

Bitcoin broke above $80,000 on Tuesday as fresh money returned to spot ETFs and traders piled back into risk. It last traded around $80,501, up more than 2%. The move caps a run that's been building since last week, Bitcoin gained over 20% in three days, its strongest three-day stretch since 2023. Much of that surge came from short sellers getting forced out, with more than $4 billion in bearish positions liquidated as prices climbed.

The administration of United States President Donald Trump has announced new economic sanctions on Tehran, describing the measures as an “economic D-Day” as the US war on Iran approaches the six-month mark.
